Mr Hyde - Best of...

Well, I promised at here it is!!

Link for direct download or podcast!!

I thought I'd provide those links up front, no sense wasting your time by making you read all the background intro. Things have been crazy up here in Canada... I'm going to be a new dad all over again and the new baby is threatening to come early, that's what's been delaying me heading to the studio and getting this baby recorded and put online.

This mix is made up of a few of my favorite tracks from the past three years and is an electro house/breaks mix... To all you people expecting a breaks only mix, SUCK IT UP!! *laugh*

This is a speedy 141BPM mix and is just over 45 minutes long.

Peace!

Mr Hyde - Late Nights #1

You know, as well as this podcast is going, I really miss playing at more clubs, parties and other venues. Having moved down to Calgary a few years back I really miss the deejays up in Edmonton (Dr Jekyll, you crazy bastard!!!). I'm an Edmonton boy at heart and I just haven't clicked with the scene down here!

Anyways, I'll be sending out a series of "Late Nights" mixes for all you house addicts out there (Don't worry, we're not forgetting about breaks). These sets will bring me back to my house roots in the Edmonton scene. You can expect these Late Nights mixes to be filled with one kind of house or another (Or a few different kinds like this one). The first edition in this series is a blend of tech, electro and straight up house... Being that this is focussing on house, we haven't amp'd up the BPM too too much (136 BPM for this one). I don't want to cheat my fans with a short mix, so this 12 track episode comes in at just over an hour. The set starts off nice and slow, but the latter tracks in the mix will knock you on your ass!! Make sure to check out the last track, a team up from my FAVORITE DEEJAY Donald Glaude AND DJ Dan!!! Both of these deejays are amazing and always deliver an awesome show and amazing tracks!

Enjoy!

Mr Hyde

[EDIT] Sorry all trying to download the latest set from the Downloads page. The "#" is messing with our download program so I'm uploading the file with "Number 1" instead of "#1".

Track Listing

1Groundhog Day by Claude VonStroke and Christian Martin
2Beauty of Silence by Andrea Doria and LXR (Inpetto remix)
3Give it up for me by Sydney Blu
4Sofa King by John Aquaviva and Olivier Giacomotto (Mark Mendes remix)
5Fiesta Elektronika by Outwork and Alp (Paolo Aliberti remix)
6In The End by Fuzzy Hair and Rock Da World (Robbie Rivera remix)
7Front to Back by Wolfgang Gartner
8Let Me Think About It by Fedde Le Grand and Ida Corr (Gregor Salto Remix)
9Give It Up For Me by Sydney Blu (Deadmau5 remix)
10New Nation by Alternative Reality (Touvan remix)

New website

Well, you may have noticed that your browser automatically redirected you to a new domain starting today. Dr Jekyll continues to be an important contributor to the podcast (Along with DTDR who together make up the awesome tag team duo Vandamage), but I want to focus on broadening the range of artists included beyond the three of us featured today (To bring excellent Canadian and international deejay talent to your listening ears).

I will remain the host of Mr Hyde's Electronic Music Podcast and all our old episodes will remain up for download (And the URL won't change anytime soon), but you will start to see new and amazing deejays featured both on my podcast and on the website.

Thanks and keep listening.

P.S. Please report and issues via comments or getting in contact with me via email or facebook.

Peace!

Mr Hyde - Pre-Sham (Post Sham in reality)

Ok, so this was supposed to be posted prior to Shambhala, but I just didn't get around to it (My wife and I ran the Canadian Death Race - www.canadiandeathrace.com the week before Sham, so it was a little tight). This is a nice house mix, mostly progressive, with a little electro thrown in for good measure.

We're now up on the iTunes store as well, so our traffic on the podcast has already started to increase (We hit over 60GB downloaded and we're only have way through the month). At this rate we may hit 150GB of downloaded mixes for the month! You guys rock!!! Keep up the downloads and share the tunes!

If anyone is interested in CD quality mixes, just email us at book@jekyllandhyde.ca and we'll be happy to hook you up.

As usual, this mix can be downloaded directly or accessed on our podcast.

Mr Hyde - Damn That's Hot

Well, everyone's gone off traveling (Ok, so by everyone I mean my future wife and child) to Ottawa so I've had some spare time to put together another mix.

Damn That's Hot is full of banging awesome tunes!!! This is probably my favorite mix that I've put together in a while. I've kept the tempo upbeat to keep feet pounding and people smiling. This really is a mix for summer; sitting outside, tunes cranked, dancing around like crazy fools!!!!

This type of music makes me anxious for Shambhala... It can't get here soon enough!!!

As usual, you can access this via our podcast (Later today) or download it directly from here.

Mr Hyde - Stomping and Grooving

Ok, so the summer is in full swing and the temperature here in Calgary is scorching (40C is what my truck measured today!!!). Now I know lots of people aren't going to be down with jumping around at high noon with the sun sweltering down, so sit back, chill out, put a couple pieces of ice in the glass and pour yourself a nice drink. Next, put on Stomping and Grooving to listen to almost a full 80 Minutes of my progressive tunes coming at you. Once the sun has set, I'm sure you'll want to dance around to this fun and light mix!

If you're not into progressive house, there are even a couple electro tracks in there to spice things up a little. A breaks mix will be coming soon, but for some reason, this hot weather just makes me want to spin some nice house beats (Maybe it's too hot for the aggressive breaks that Jekyll and I usually spin).

As usual, you can check the mix out on our podcast or download it directly from our downloads page (Here).

Mr Hyde - Mr Progressive

For a long time I spun trance. Yes, I'll admit it, I spun a lot of epic, progressive, light fluffy trance! It lasted a surprisingly long time given the fact that my roots in music lie in punk and industrial (Then made the progression into Drum N Bass thanks to John Rolodex). Well, eventually I found myself moving into harder music, which at first mean hard house (NRG, whatever you want to call it now). I was spinning hard house back in the day... 1999 or 2000 or so... Sure there were lots of crap tracks back then, but not as bad as things are today. Anyways, long story short, I found myself progressing into harder and darker sub genres of music, finally ending up with breaks and techno being the two flavors of music I spun most of the time.

Well, today I'm head back to my mid-way-roots. Ok, so this is definitely not an epic trance set! Please help me if I spin more of that!!! *puke* *laugh* Ok, so I don't hate it, but it just isn't my thing. Anyways, this is a progressive house set that dabbles a little more in the fun sounds (Rather then the darker, acid-y stuff I usually play). We'll see how this does on our podcast and downloads... Maybe we'll do another, maybe we'll never do it again! :D

Speaking of the podcast and downloads, you guys are awesome! This month we'll do well over 100GB in downloads... I'm sure we'll do the equivalent to over 2,500 downloads this month!! That's crazy guys!!!

Back to the topic at hand (The mix). Here it is in all its glory... As usual you can download it off of our podcast or directly from here.

Donation link

I'm sure that some of you may have noticed the new donation button on the right hand side. Flux Incorporated has always been kind enough to donate the bandwidth needed to host this site, and believe me, it takes a lot. We do an average of 3GB of downloads a day, or 80 full mix downloads a day, and this ends up eating up close to 100GB of traffic a month. To keep this running, that take over $200.00/month in just bandwidth costs!!!

First off, we want to give a big thanks to Flux Incorporated, they've been (And continue to be) great to our little endeavor. However, we need to start to make this site a little more sustainable over the long term, which is why we've placed the donations button on the page. We'd love to keep the site, podcast and downloads add free, so hopefully this little button will help us to make this venture one that continues on indefinitely.

Please don't think that there is any pressure to donate, we want people first and foremost to enjoy our music! Download it, listen to it, share it with your friends... Burn it to a CD and ask your local promoters to book us ;) And if you like it enough, feel free to send a couple bucks our way.

Thanks and please continue to enjoy our music!!!!

Mr Hyde - Just Messin

Ok, so I know how everyone likes their specific genre of music. Some people love breaks, other's die for epic trance... Well, rather then just stick to one genre I love to explore a certain set (Sorry, I don't really like epic trance in the same way I used to). This mix mixes (HAHAHA, aren't I funny?) breaks (Progressive and otherwise) with electro house and even a little techno.

Just Messin comes in at just under an hour (55+ minutes) and is bangin in around 135BPM.

Tracks include

Burma by Lostep remixed by Sasha
Hammerhead - Original Mix by Klaus Heavyweight Hill

Frustration with fringe DJ products

Ok, so along time ago I jumped on the Final Scratch bandwagon. I was actually the third person in Canada to get the original unit. I had pre-ordered and paid for the unit almost a full year before it was released. When it finally arrived I was in love. This was the hay day of MP3 sharing, so finding the illegitimate music wasn't all that hard... Sure, there were difficulties and Final Scratch was pretty finicky but as time progressed and so did the patches, the software got a little better. Then came 1.5, and then 2.0 and then.... It's been a fairly regular upgrade cycle and each time it seems like they ditch the previous versions hardware and the users end up getting screwed (Ok, we do get a discount to upgrade, but that discount isn't that large).

Plus, Stanton has seemed to bounce the actual hardware/software development and support from company to company and this is confusing for users and paying customers... Who am I going to call this week for support.

Now it seems like Stanton and Native Instruments have parted company and will have competing products... Great for those of us that have invested thousands of dollars in equipment that now neither company will support (NI has already released their new version... I'm sure Stanton will soon enough). It is so frustrating to constantly be finding out that your new hardware is in need of replacing to get support and patches for software to maintain your DJ setup...

Is this the same with other companies and less core components?

Mr Hyde - Rough Around The Edges

This weeks offering is a techno mix that comes in at 143 BPM. I've always loved techno and it was about time that one of us post a techno mix to the podcast. Techno for me has always been a blast to spin. The speed that these tracks are played at just seem to keep me pumping... Don't get me wrong, breaks are great, but there just seems to be something about techno that gets into my soul and just makes me start dancing around.

Tracks for this mix are:

Love Delux - Original Mix by Ortin Cam
Just Lay - Marco Nastic Remix by Elton D remixed by Marco Nastic
Murder Was The Bass - Chris Liebing 'CTTO' Mix by DK remixed by Chris Liebing
The B-East Roller - Ben Sims Hardgroove Edit by Len Faki remixed by Ben Sims
One Legged Disco - Original Mix by Ben Sims and Paul Mac
Julia - Original Mix by Hertz
Move Beyond - Original Mix by Virgil Enzinger
Stick It To The Man - Original Mix by DJ ESP
Invaders - Original Mix by DJ Mika
Africanizam - Original Mix by DJ Mika

This mix comes in at just over 40 minutes and should keep you running, dancing and grooving right up until the end.

Check it out on our podcast or download it directly here.

Good track but a video not really worth watching...

Well, in our previous posting with the Pendulum video we talked about how many electronic music videos just seemed to be an after thought to the music. I thought I would provide an example of just such a video. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the song and I love the sentiment that the video is trying to get across, but for a major artist remix, this just doesn't seem to do the song justice... I could have slapped this together on my PC.

The track (In my opinion) is amazing... I love the remix (And I also like the original), but the video just seems to be a 30 second after thought ("Hey, let's put together a video and throw it up on the 'net and see what people think"). I'm not saying that the videos need to be a big $$ investment, but they need to be creative and well though out and this just doesn't seem to cut it.

Well, check the video out... It isn't a complete waste of time, after all, the track is awesome!

Not our usual fare... The iPhone from Apple

Ok, so life is always interesting and yesterday was no difference. For those of you that don't know me, I'm a little bit of a technology freak. I love it! I've had a number of different Blackberries, Samsung, Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Motorola, etc, etc phones.

Anyways, the latest phone suffered a terrible blow yesterday! I drove over it with our SUV... Twice!!! It fell out of my pocket when I was getting into the SUV and drove over it when I drove away and again when I parked. Well, I was quite dejected to find out that the phone was no longer all nice and shiny. The screen had a huge black spot on it now and I could no longer see what was happening. Other then that, the phone seemed fine!!

Well the search was on... Time to find the latest and greatest phone... I began to search and the more I looked the more dejected I became... I didn't find anything that even came close to what I thought would be a good new phone... Until this afternoon!

Steve Jobs of Apple fame announced today that there will be a new phone coming to market... the Apple iPhone!!! It looks sooo slick and I can't wait to get my hands on this gear. I know that this doesn't conform to what we usually put on the site, but I just couldn't resist!!!

Check out more about this awesome new phone here.

Scratch Master Netik - 2006 DMC Champion

A while back we brought you a video of some amazing break dancing... This got me thinking about life back in the day and I started to think about a club night where we had the pleasure of watching Q-Bert scratch it up for an hour or so. This quickly led to a search of youtube for some video of today's scratch masters.

This is a video of the 2006 DMC champion hard at work and man, is it ever inspiring.

If you're interested in more videos and the like from Netik, check out this page (YouTube search results).

Jekyll's 'Best of 2006' Extravaganza!

Another year has flown by at break-neck speed, leaving behind it a wake of dust, and a year's worth of memories. Hopefully, memories of all the good times.

It's already over a week into 2007, but I'm usually about a week behind at any given time anyway. As such, I give you my official BEST OF 2006 list! Keep in mind that these are completely my opinion, and based off my personal experiences this past year, if you have some you'd like to share, I encourage you to post them in our new forum. It's fairly lonely in there right now...

Best Party

Shambhala Music Festival '06 (9th annual)

This catergory is a little bit stacked if you ask me. Without a doubt, Western Canada's Largest annual party. In excess of 10,000 party people hidden among the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in beautiful British Columbia. Starting from the 5 themed stages, enormous sound and visuals.. all the way over to sunny days on the beach by the river, a full on week of good times

Needless to say, I have my ticket for '07

Best DJ

DJ Dan
Oddly enough, the first time I had the opportunity to see DJ Dan was in 2004, when we brought him to Edmonton to headline "Metropolis" (along with Cosmic Gate, AK1200, and Capital J. Which was also marked the first appearance of Jekyll and Hyde as well). Dan has been a hot commodity in North America for many years, as well as one of the main driving forces in house music. Dan has moved almost 20 spots this year to land himself at #5 on DJMAG's infamous top 100 DJ list, despite a lesser degree of popularity in Europe. All his insane credentials aside, Dan manages to maintain a down to earth attitude.

He also managed to get me to drink shots of Jager. And I NEVER drink Jager. So that's worth something.

Best Set

The Freestylers @ Shambhala Music Festival

Hands down, the best set last year. If not, the best set I've ever seen. Seemlessly mixing the sickest breaks, with drum and bass, and hip hop. I'll never forget hearing the roaring synth line from Prodigy's "Voodoo People", cut over into the high note hook from Jay Z's "Big Pimpin' ".

Friggin' brilliant.

Best Producer

Lee Coombs

Being a newbie producer has made me think about music in a completely different way. As such, listening to tracks produced by Lee Coombs is more or less mind blowing. Check out the track "Shiver", maybe you'll see what I'm talking about. Also, if you're feeling inclined, a pretty cool interview with Lee Coombs over at Club Planet:

Well, there you have it minions! Another year in the bag. Take care of yourselves!

OOOOOOH MAN!! Someone needs to bring this guy to a party

Wow! One of my favorite dance styles has always been break dancing. I love seeing breakers at clubs, parties, whatever... I don't see many out and about these days (Is that because there are fewer breakers, more club kids or am I just lame and staying home more?).

The guy in this video is SICK! If you're going to check one video out, check this one out!!! Man, this guys is amazing!!! Someone needs to seriously get this guy out to a party here! I'd love to see this guy throw down.

Anyways, enjoy the video (Courtesy of youtube.com). Oh, and this Frenchman's name is Junior.

A good example of what deejays need to strive to be...

Through out the years I have seen many deejay's (And had the pleasure to share the stage with a number of them). My personal philosophy on being a deejay is that you are there to please the crowd (Sprinkled in with a bit of narcissistic indulgences from time to time). Ultimately, a good deejay fuses his love of the music he's playing with what the crowd is asking for. I believe that my best sets have always come when I am most in tune with the crowd and they are feeding my ego *laugh*. We, the deejays, are there to please the people that pay to be at the event, the party goers, the candy kids, the clubbers... whatever you want to call them.

Back to the deejays that I mentioned above... There are so many of the "big name" or top deejays that demand the huge $$ to come and play and more often then not I leave disappointed. They simply show up, play their standard set and leave. The interaction, the ability to feed off the crowd and fuel their dancing and enjoyment seem to be lacking.

I have had the immense pleasure of seeing Donald Glaude spin many many times. He is one of the few deejays that I will go out of my way to see. He has the innate ability to floor the entire audience and to continually grow and evolve. Every time I see this man play, I leave with a sense of awe and the euphoria I used to get when I first started frequenting parties and club nights. If you haven't seen this man spin, then I highly recommend that you take the opportunity to do so when you can.

Here's a little of what I've been talking about...

A video you must watch!

You know, I rarely see electronic music videos... I just don't think many groups or producers have enough money to front the cash needed (Or the marketing to make it viable), but with the advent of YouTube I think we'll start to see more and more electronic music videos pop up.

Overall, I think the quality and entertainment of those that I have seen were pretty low... The music was definitely the driving force and the video always seemed an after thought. This Pendulum video definitely breaks the mold and I was laughing from beginning to end!

I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Pendulum, but for those of you that aren't, you should really check out their drum n bass offering! The song "Slam" is a good example of their work, offering a hard bass line that just seems to keep my feet tapping. The whole CD is amazing, it is exactly the type of dnb that I love to listen to. Check it out if you get a chance!

Someone was kind enough to post the Pendulum - Slam video on YouTube and I think this is something that all of you guys need to watch!!! Check out the video and enjoy!

Mr Hyde - To The Point

Well. I decided that the Christmas break was a good time to put together a new mix... Check out To The Point... This is a shorter mix (Because you need to spend some time with your family) and it comes in at 33 minutes in length.
