Mr Hyde - Pre-Sham (Post Sham in reality)

Ok, so this was supposed to be posted prior to Shambhala, but I just didn't get around to it (My wife and I ran the Canadian Death Race - www.canadiandeathrace.com the week before Sham, so it was a little tight). This is a nice house mix, mostly progressive, with a little electro thrown in for good measure.

We're now up on the iTunes store as well, so our traffic on the podcast has already started to increase (We hit over 60GB downloaded and we're only have way through the month). At this rate we may hit 150GB of downloaded mixes for the month! You guys rock!!! Keep up the downloads and share the tunes!

If anyone is interested in CD quality mixes, just email us at book@jekyllandhyde.ca and we'll be happy to hook you up.

As usual, this mix can be downloaded directly or accessed on our podcast.

Mr Hyde - Mr Progressive

For a long time I spun trance. Yes, I'll admit it, I spun a lot of epic, progressive, light fluffy trance! It lasted a surprisingly long time given the fact that my roots in music lie in punk and industrial (Then made the progression into Drum N Bass thanks to John Rolodex). Well, eventually I found myself moving into harder music, which at first mean hard house (NRG, whatever you want to call it now). I was spinning hard house back in the day... 1999 or 2000 or so... Sure there were lots of crap tracks back then, but not as bad as things are today. Anyways, long story short, I found myself progressing into harder and darker sub genres of music, finally ending up with breaks and techno being the two flavors of music I spun most of the time.

Well, today I'm head back to my mid-way-roots. Ok, so this is definitely not an epic trance set! Please help me if I spin more of that!!! *puke* *laugh* Ok, so I don't hate it, but it just isn't my thing. Anyways, this is a progressive house set that dabbles a little more in the fun sounds (Rather then the darker, acid-y stuff I usually play). We'll see how this does on our podcast and downloads... Maybe we'll do another, maybe we'll never do it again! :D

Speaking of the podcast and downloads, you guys are awesome! This month we'll do well over 100GB in downloads... I'm sure we'll do the equivalent to over 2,500 downloads this month!! That's crazy guys!!!

Back to the topic at hand (The mix). Here it is in all its glory... As usual you can download it off of our podcast or directly from here.

Mr Hyde - Kick The Beat

It has definitely been a while since we posted a new mix, but here's one for you. This one's encoded at 320kbps for CD quality music and comes in at 103MB so it may take a little longer to downlaod then you'd normally expect. Again, this podcast is for you guys, so let me know if you don't like the increased quality and we can switch back to 128kbps.

This mix should keep you rocking and grooving for 45 minutes and is a mixture of electronic music as it normally is.

Mr Hyde - Just Messin

Ok, so I know how everyone likes their specific genre of music. Some people love breaks, other's die for epic trance... Well, rather then just stick to one genre I love to explore a certain set (Sorry, I don't really like epic trance in the same way I used to). This mix mixes (HAHAHA, aren't I funny?) breaks (Progressive and otherwise) with electro house and even a little techno.

Just Messin comes in at just under an hour (55+ minutes) and is bangin in around 135BPM.

Tracks include

Burma by Lostep remixed by Sasha
Hammerhead - Original Mix by Klaus Heavyweight Hill
Crowd Control - Robosapiens Remix by Vital Substance remixed by Robosapiens

Play feat. Noah Deep - Elite Force Remix by Redlight remixed by Elite Force

'Bout Time!

New mix is going up this week. A little bit of a deviation from the usual duo of myself and mix master Mr Hyde.

Several years ago, I had an opportunity to throw down some bangin' house tracks at Twilight Afterhours with resident, and Edmonton DJ local favorite "DTDR". Although we've had a few random chances to mix together since then, we haven't recorded anything. Flash forward a few years and musical genres, finally, and you have this week's mix;

'Bout Time! - Dr Jekyll VS DTDR

A full hour New School/Funky breaks mix, with attitude from beginning to end.

Tracklist to follow.

You can access it on our podcast or directly here

Good track but a video not really worth watching...

Well, in our previous posting with the Pendulum video we talked about how many electronic music videos just seemed to be an after thought to the music. I thought I would provide an example of just such a video. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the song and I love the sentiment that the video is trying to get across, but for a major artist remix, this just doesn't seem to do the song justice... I could have slapped this together on my PC.

The track (In my opinion) is amazing... I love the remix (And I also like the original), but the video just seems to be a 30 second after thought ("Hey, let's put together a video and throw it up on the 'net and see what people think"). I'm not saying that the videos need to be a big $$ investment, but they need to be creative and well though out and this just doesn't seem to cut it.

Well, check the video out... It isn't a complete waste of time, after all, the track is awesome!

A good example of what deejays need to strive to be...

Through out the years I have seen many deejay's (And had the pleasure to share the stage with a number of them). My personal philosophy on being a deejay is that you are there to please the crowd (Sprinkled in with a bit of narcissistic indulgences from time to time). Ultimately, a good deejay fuses his love of the music he's playing with what the crowd is asking for. I believe that my best sets have always come when I am most in tune with the crowd and they are feeding my ego *laugh*. We, the deejays, are there to please the people that pay to be at the event, the party goers, the candy kids, the clubbers... whatever you want to call them.

Back to the deejays that I mentioned above... There are so many of the "big name" or top deejays that demand the huge $$ to come and play and more often then not I leave disappointed. They simply show up, play their standard set and leave. The interaction, the ability to feed off the crowd and fuel their dancing and enjoyment seem to be lacking.

I have had the immense pleasure of seeing Donald Glaude spin many many times. He is one of the few deejays that I will go out of my way to see. He has the innate ability to floor the entire audience and to continually grow and evolve. Every time I see this man play, I leave with a sense of awe and the euphoria I used to get when I first started frequenting parties and club nights. If you haven't seen this man spin, then I highly recommend that you take the opportunity to do so when you can.

Here's a little of what I've been talking about...

Jekyll presents 2nd part to Break It Or Leave It

From Jekyll:

Break it or Leave it (Part 2 - Extended)

My offering this week is inspired by none other than Mr Hyde's "Break it Or Leave it". And seeing as how an original name eludes me right now, I'm just tacking a Part 2 on the end of it. :)

Adding to Mr Hyde's floor filling style of driving breakbeat is my own dash of dirty breaks/house. With tracks from big up party breaks labels such as Finger Lickin', Against the Grain, and Cut & Run. Watch for tracks like;

"Get 'em High" - Stanton Warriors F/ Sway
"Unconditional" - The Bravery (Benny Benassi Remix)
"Never Coming Back" - Stereo 8
"Detroit" - Unknown Artist (Cut & Run remix)
